Cincinnati Open
The tournament people still call the Cincinnati Masters is branded the Cincinnati Open. The Western & Southern Open name covered 2011 through 2023. The city name came back in 2024 after that sponsor left.
The event dates to 1899, which the tournament and the history page both treat as the start. It is described as the oldest US tennis tournament still played in or near its original city. The first courts were at the Avondale Athletic Club, on clay made from crushed brick dust. In 1903 it moved to the Cincinnati Tennis Club. Mason has been home since 1979, at the Lindner Family Tennis Center.
The name trail is longer than one rebrand. Cincinnati Open in 1899, then the Tri-State Tennis Tournament from 1901 to 1969, then a run of ATP Championships and sponsor titles, then Western & Southern Financial Group Masters from 2002 to 2010, then Western & Southern Open from 2011 to 2023, then Cincinnati Open from 2024. Sports Business Journal dated the latest change to 7–8 Jan 2024 and described a six-sponsor model after Western & Southern stepped back. I lead with that 2024 return, not with “renamed in 2011”.
The grounds have 31 courts, which the official FAQ states. The history page lists five permanent stadiums: Center Court 11,600, Grandstand 5,000, Champions Court 2,300, Stadium 3 4,000 and Court 10 2,000. Surface was clay from 1899 to 1978 and hard since 1979.
The 2026 window is 13–23 Aug, draw 96 singles / 48 qualifying / 32 doubles, men’s prize money US$9,415,725. Arthur Fils won the 2026 men’s event and Coco Gauff won the women’s event. Each champion appears in the corresponding ATP or WTA final report and in the compiled Cincinnati Open history. The 2027 window on the official FAQ is 10–22 Aug, also one source.
Federer won seven titles between 2005 and 2015 and reached eight finals. Djokovic has three and completed the Career Golden Masters here in 2018. The women’s event returned in 2004 after a gap from 1989 to 2003. That return is one history page.
It sits immediately after Canada on the 2026 calendar. If you are planning a trip, read both date windows before you book the shared day.
