Canadian Open

Updated 2026-11-05

The Canada Masters is the National Bank Open. The men and women play the same event window in different cities, and they swap cities every year.

Even years put the men at IGA Stadium in Montreal and the women at Sobeys Stadium in Toronto. Odd years reverse it. 2026 was an even year, so Ben Shelton’s title was in Montreal and Iga Świątek’s was in Toronto. Both the history page and the event site support that split and the 2–13 Aug window.

The tournament dates to 1881. It is often called the second-oldest active tennis tournament after Wimbledon. I have the official “since 1881” line and one encyclopedia page for the “second-oldest” wording, so I say “one of the oldest still running”, and I cite both rather than shout a superlative.

The surface has been outdoor hard since 1979. Before that it was clay. The 2026 draw is 96 singles, 32 qualifying and 32 doubles. Prize money is listed as US$9,415,724. That is one dollar under the Cincinnati and Shanghai figures in the same season. I keep the dollar. Merging it would hide a real printed difference.

Title counts need the same care. Nadal has five titles in the ATP era. Lendl won six before 1990, and the ATP-era table leaves those out. If a page says “the record is five”, it has dropped Lendl. I print both.

The English brand is National Bank Open presented by Rogers. The French brand is Omnium Banque Nationale. The 2027 window on the event site is 31 Jul–12 Aug, with the men in Toronto and the women in Montreal. That 2027 line is one source. It also overlaps the published Cincinnati window by two days. Read the calendar page before you treat either as a first-ball date.
