Tennis Masters Cup

Updated 2026-11-05

The Tennis Masters Cup was the season-ending championship for eight men, played from 2000 through 2008. It is the event now called the ATP Finals. It was never one of the nine Masters 1000 tournaments.

The ATP and the ITF set it up in December 1999 to replace two separate finales, the ATP Tour World Championships and the Grand Slam Cup. Eight singles players and eight doubles teams were invited. A major champion ranked between 9 and 20 could take a place. I have that structure from the ATP Finals history article. The encyclopedia’s edition pages repeat the champions, so the table below is labelled as one compiled publisher. I say that instead of calling every score “two independent sources”.

The name lasted nine editions. In 2009 it became the ATP World Tour Finals. In 2017 it became the ATP Finals. Hosts moved: Lisbon in 2000, Sydney in 2001, Shanghai in 2002, Houston in 2003 and 2004, then Shanghai again from 2005 through 2008. Houston is the outdoor-hard pair. Shanghai in 2005 was carpet. The other indoor weeks were hard.

Federer won four of the nine. Hewitt won two. Djokovic’s 2008 win was his first title at this event. Djokovic beat Nikolay Davydenko in the 2008 final. The Federer–Murray match searched for from that edition was a round-robin match, rather than the final; the champion and final score are shown separately in the table.

The 2026 ATP Finals are in Turin, 15–22 Nov. That is the descendant, not a Tennis Masters Cup revival. If you want the nine-event tour, use the Masters 1000 hub.
